About the Commission

FUNDING

The International Commission on Intervention and State Sovereignty was funded by the Government of Canada together with the following international foundations. The Governments of the United Kingdom and Switzerland also made financial contributions to the work of the Commission.

The Carnegie Corporation was established by Andrew Carnegie in 1911, with the objective of "promoting the advancement and diffusion of knowledge and understanding." Its program on International Peace and Security was developed to consider the challenges surrounding the building of a global community in an age "when isolationism and nationalism seem to be fostering a fractured view of the world." The program seeks to "draw policy attention to critical issues through analysis and dissemination of findings to policymakers, scholars, the media, and the general public,"and includes consideration of new dimensions of security, which addresses the prevalent current phenomenon of conflict within, rather than between, states.

The Hewlett Foundation, incorporated as a private foundation in the State of California in 1966, was established by the Palo Alto industrialist William R. Hewlett, his late wife, Flora Lamson Hewlett, and their eldest son, Walter B. Hewlett. The Foundation's broad purpose is to promote the well-being of mankind by supporting selected activities of a charitable nature, as well as organizations or institutions engaged in such activities. The Foundation concentrates its resources on activities in education, performing arts, population, environment, conflict resolution, family and community development, and U.S.-Latin American relations.

Dr. Jennifer Allen Simons established the Simons Foundation in 1985 with funding from the engineering company, to actively promote education in peace, disarmament, global cooperation, human rights, social justice, and environmental issues. The Foundation is now funded by the Simons family.
